One of the best-known tourism regions of Portugal, the Algarve offers the visitor
some of the finest beaches in the country. In addition to its historical traditions,
a legacy from the many peoples who have passed through it over the centuries, the
region presents a surprising landscape, in which white houses contrast with rocky
mountains, long sand dunes with small coves, between rural terraces and animated
cities.
Having been one of the important points of departure and passage to North Africa
and the Atlantic Ocean, it still possesses innumerable vestiges from the long period
of Arab occupation.
These may be seen in the architecture in particular in the Moorish quarters known
as medinas, the castles and mosques scattered a little all over but also in the
customs that influenced local culture during various centuries. Tourism has been
the main driving force of the regions development in recent decades. It is the preferred
tourism destination for most Portuguese and many foreigners.
This preference arises from the fact that it is the region with the mildest climate
and has beaches bathed by tepid waters. In the Algarve it is easy to find a good
meal in some small village restaurant. Even the smallest tavern offers various dishes,
mostly prepared with fish as the coast is very rich in innumerable species.
The special fish dish of the Algarve, which one must try, is the Cataplana. Served
in a traditional brass pan, it is a mixture of clams, pork, spices, garlic, onions,
tomatoes and white wine. Be sure to also try the Caldeirada (fish stew), cooked
with your preferred fish, as well as a dish of Lulas Recheadas (stuffed squid),
the Atum Grelhado (grilled tuna) and the famous Bacalhau à Bras (salt cod with potatoes
and egg).
Amongst the meat dishes and highly appreciated in Portugal are those of pork, such
as Febras de Porco (pork fillets), Carne de Porco à Alentejana (pork with clams)
and Leitão Assado (roast suckling pig). If you prefer shellfish (marisco), you are
certainly faced with a large variety.
The most popular are the shrimp, prawns and crab. As for desserts, the Algarvians
have known how to make the most of their Moorish roots. It was the Moors who originally
introduced sugar and egg desserts to the country. They also planted the first fig
and almond trees, whose fruits have enriched the regional confectionery. Try the
Leite Creme (cream custard), the almond desserts, the Morgado de Figos (fig and
marzipan dessert).
Thank You.
